Business Writing
Successful businesspeople know the power of the written word. The Business Writing classes teach you to write effectively in emails, letters, or publications.
Attendees represent a wide variety of organizations within companies including executives, editors, sales & marketing, to administrative assistants and more. The business writing interactive lectures are listed below:
- Writing Effective Email Interactive Lecture (1 - 3 hours)
- E-mail sure is easy to use. That must be why it’s now the most common way to communicate in writing. But e-mail is most effective only if it is also easy to read and understand. From the subject line to the signature, we can, and should, consider the words we use and how the “document” looks, and what we can do to make the reader’s job easier.
- This 90-minute program covers not just general principles of clear writing, but also principles unique to the electronic medium, including considerations of etiquette and legal questions about e-mail, such as confidentiality.
- Writing Letters Interactive Lecture (1 - 3 hours)
- This 90-minute program covers how to get the reader’s attention right away, so he or she will read your letter before all the others that arrived that day, and how to ensure the purpose of your letter is clear. We’ll look at complex letters that demand some response or action, as well as cover letters and other letters simply convey information.
- Editing and Proofreading for Administrative Assistants Interactive Lecture (1
- 3 hours)
- Like “Inspector No. 36” at the underwear factory, a secretary or administrative assistant is usually the last person to put his or her seal of approval on a document. Often under extreme time pressure, the assistant is trusted to save the boss from embarrassment by catching mistakes and anticipating a reader’s confusion.
- In this 90-minute program, we will cover some of the basics of grammar and usage, including the question that so plagued the Sphinx: When do you use that and when do you use which? We’ll also talk about techniques that proofreaders use to be more efficient.
- Writing For Publication Interactive Lecture (1 - 3 hours)
- Getting an article published in your area of expertise builds both your reputation and your business; it should also provide information or perspective that readers will care about.
- In this two-hour program, we cover not only the writing an organization of an effective article, but also how to pick a topic to write about, how to contact publications, how to work with an editor, and how to use the article after publication to continue to build your reputation and business.
- Writing That Flows Interactive Lecture (1 - 3 hours)
- This two-hour program covers writing techniques that hold a reader’s interest by showing the connections between your thoughts. These techniques include providing transitions and other clear signals about where the discussion is going, but also include choosing words and controlling syntax to make the content dynamic.
- Grammar and Usage Tips Interactive Lecture (1 - 3 hours)
- Part refresher course and part “everything you always wanted to know,” this one-hour program provides a process for editing your own business writing to conform with the rules of grammar and usage.
